Otters are cute water animals. In Japan, some “otter coffee shops”are open. People can pay to play with the otters there and take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos shown online have interested more people to buy otters as pets.
However, these enjoyable photos and videos hide the damage (损害) that the online trade is doing to otters. In fact, wild otters are facing threats-they are killed to make coats; in some places, fishermen are killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters.
In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. However, it was shown in a report that 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old. When they are kept as pets by humans, they do not live full and natural lives.
Otters usually live in family groups of up to 15 in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. These animals also need enough space to swim. Their owners’ bathtubs (浴缸) or pools are not as large as the area of water in the wild.
On the other hand, otters aren’t good pets. They have a very special fishy smell (气味). If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more terrible. What’s more, when otters are unhappy, they will make loud noise and even hurt people. So we should stop buying otters and let them have a happy and natural life.

The Horsetail Fall is one of Yosemite National Park’s most amazing places to visit.
Around the second week of February, the sunset (日落) hits the Horsetail Fall to light the upper (上层的) parts of the waterfall. And when conditions are right, the Horsetail Fall becomes orange and red at sunset. It is like red-hot lava (熔岩) pouring down from the top of the EI Capitan. So, it got the name “firefall”.
The firefall is a perfect match (完美结合) of the weather, the fall, the time and the watching place. It usually appears on dry, warm and cloudless days. There must be enough moving water to make a firefall, too. So there must be enough snow on the mountain top, and it turns into water on warm afternoons. The sun goes to the best place before the fall in late February. And the best time to watch the fall is 5 to 15 minutes before the sunset. Only at this time can visitors see the firefall. The EI Capitan Picnic Area is the best place to watch, because it is close to the fall and is perfect to set up tents and take photos. Every year in February, lots of people come to watch the firefall. Although the view may appear just minutes before sunset, many of them have to come hours earlier to get a right place to set their tools to take photos in time. “I’m just saying that the Yosemite Firefall is something people don’t want to miss during the winter,” says Kate Moore, a traveler.

Living in a community (社区), people depend on each other and help each other. That is why a group of special people in the community are ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
For example, what would we do without a community fire station? If a house catches fire, as the Millers’ house did last month, it might be burned (燃烧) down and people might get hurt… or worse. Luckily, the community firemen came to put out the fire and saved them.
Let’s take a minute and think. Who provides physical check-up for the elderly people? Who gives vaccination (接种疫苗) to babies in the neighborhood? Who helps people learn more about health? It is the community doctors and nurses that make sure we have a healthy life.
And what about the police? They protect our families and things we own. Especially after a heavy rain, they always come to save the people.
Think about all the other service workers in our community. Cleaners collect waste and rubbish and keep our community sanitary. Road workers repair traffic signs and fix holes in the streets to protect not just us, but also our cars! And think about what would happen without teachers in our school.
Think again about what we eat, what we wear and what we use every day. We cannot make them, but we use them all the time. The tireless workers keep our community running. We need them but in fact, we are one of them. So let’s help each other. Only when we work together can we make our community a better place.
